As part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024, the Tartu World University series of events organised 47 meetings that connected scientists and communities, attended by 17,966 people. Together, they sought solutions to global problems using local examples and vice versa. Communities will continue to address World University themes and organise events in the future.

On Friday, 23 August, at 17:00, the art exhibition “Missing” will open at the Tartu Art House, displaying contemporary artworks made from 40-million-year-old bones.

This year, 26 schools in Estonia had their students make over 2200 nature observations, which contributed to mapping local biodiversity. The observations from May 1st to June 7th are now available to the public and can be accessed on the eDiversity Data Portal.

In response to the current environmental crisis, the exhibition “Veil of Nature” by Luxembourgish artist Justine Blau, curated by Fanny Weinquin, explores, through works navigating between documentation, illusion and narration, man’s relationship with nature and conservation practices. Guided tours of the exhibition “Veil of Nature” will take place every Saturday from June 22nd to July 20th and on the last day of the exhibition, July 28th.

According to the latest census, 243 languages are spoken as mother tongues in Estonia, so we have a lot of people who speak Estonian as a second language.

The international conference "Traces of Extinction: Species Loss, Solastalgia, and Semiotics of Recovery" held on 5–7 June 2024 at UT Oecologicum (J. Liivi 2, Tartu) sheds light on the various aspects of biodiversity loss and discusses cultural, subjective, and semiotic approaches to understanding species extinction. Registration is open until 23 May.

A multidisciplinary student exhibition emerged under the leadership of Timo Maran, Professor of Ecosemiotics and Environmental Humanities, as a result of an interdisciplinary research project and a semiotics master's course. The course combined semiotics, natural sciences, and methods of creative inquiry. The exhibition, opened on 9 May, presents the Umwelten of animals to the public. It is also part of the Prima Vista and the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 programmes and will remain open until 20 June.

The conference takes place 5–7 June 2024 at the Oecologicum of the University of Tartu, Juhan Liivi 2, Tartu. The sixth mass species extinction is one of the greatest ecological threats of our time. This conference focuses on cultural, subjective and semiotic approaches to extinction.

With the beginning of spring, tickets for the Linnujämm and the multimedia show "Emajõe sünd" went on sale. The concert and the performances will take place in the unique performance setting of Tartu Lodjakoda.

As part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024, the exhibition “Unknown” invites visitors to reflect on environmental degradation and endangered species.
